The Reunion

My flight to Hobart, though long, was surprisingly comfortable. I am sure the anticipation of the surprise and the continuation of the adventure helped to ease whatever discomfort I had.

Shane and the rest of the team on the Kapitan Klebnikov had done an excellent job orchestrating the surprise. All the baggage was hoisted onto the deck then inspected by a cute little beagle sniffing for food and organics prohibited in Tasmania. Shane had borrowed the “tester package” that the customs guys use to train the dogs and placed it into one of our bags. The dog, on cue, identified our bag as trouble, allowing Shane to call Dana and the kids out onto the dock for interrogation. As they fumbled with the bag and an excuse – and as the whole ship looked on from above – I turned the corner.

It is such a gift that you are letting the rest of us witness your remarkable journey. The courage it took to continue on your mission knowing your husband/Dad/best friend was only going to be able to continue in spirit is beyond remarkable. These lessons will be with you for all of time. The will and guts it took your hero to join you so quickly …. will perhaps be the topic for your college essay one day when you reflect back on all of the moments you have shared and caught pictures of both with and with out your cameras. Your clip reminds me of a saying which has traveled with our family through time.”There is no obstacle or problem that enough love can’t conquer.” Someday when you look back on this experience you will see that Greg’s(/Dads) set back, although a nightmare at the time it happened ,was indeed a gift as it reminded you all that life isn’t a dress rehearsal and that each day is a gift. I often tell your Open Fields siblings to touch a life a day. Today you touched mine. Thank you. Dad tells me you are singing to the world and sharing so much ….add this one to your song list(it is in our current show and will keep you karmically connected!) Have Mom and Dad…fill in the rest….”Its a world of laughter, a world of tears ,Its a world of hopes its a world of fear, there’s so much that we share that its time we’re aware its a small world after all!! Tons of love, peace and hugs from Keith, Tina, Kadie , Stephanie , Jordana ,Jordan and your Open Fields family!!!

  8. White Family,

I check this blog all the time. I’ve even gotten friends from college hooked who have seen me browsing through it during class (whoops!). When we all got back for Christmas break Emma, the Hamiltons and I spent a night talking about everything we’d gotten to experience through this blog. I stopped checking while you were in Antartica but after hearing from Page, Carol and Jae about the accident I was back on here waiting for the reunion!

SO SO happy to see you all together again! Can’t wait to follow all of the rest of your adventures, but this post was definitely my favorite so far!

We are happy that you recovered and were not hurt more.

I am sure you probably do not remember us, but we were in the Galapagos with you and also saw you in Machu Picchu. You Mom Doris helped me out on ship when I was not feeling very well.

Please have a safe journey now and Greg do not do anything foolish!!

  25. Hi, Greg:

This is Vivian from the Vavilov ship. I am so happy to know that your surgery went well and you have reunited with your family! After I got home from Antarctica, I was talking about your family’s world journey nonstop to my husband. One thing for sure – next time when I go to Antarctica, I will not go solo and I will bring the whole family!

Enjoy the rest of your journey and keep posting blogs. My kids really loved your Children’s posting!

    Vivian

  26. Hi Greg,

Just learned from your website about your sliding accident, but am thrilled that you were able to get to Tom Gill, and then to rejoin your family. Tom is the best–he also did knee surgery on another friend on Jan. 4th. Enjoy yourself, keep posting, and I’ll keep checking.
